The war has and will continue to have a significant negative impact on emotional and mental health for millions of children. Providing conventional therapy is neither possible logistically nor a top priority. Another consideration is the negative cultural perception of therapy and its underlying importance.
We had an idea to include some basic psychological concepts in the stories for children that could help them adjust to their new reality. For example, a story where a main character moves to another country and faces challenges (such as language), but finds the strength to overcome and makes new friends will be relatable to many children that have left Ukraine. The concept of therapy through storytelling is not a widely used format of childrens’ books, but we believe it can be a powerful tool that could have a positive impact on our children. These children represent our future, and the future of the whole world.
For psychologists
How can you help as a Psychologist or a Therapist?
Help design the guidelines. Questions to consider:
a) What story themes, by age, would you suggest for the target audience?
For example, children ages 2-4 may not understand what is happening, but they experience the change in their lives.
b) What are some basic principles of therapy that could be used in each age category?
c) What are some topics or themes to focus and to avoid in each age category?
2. Review the stories and provide feedback to creators. We are doing something innovative that few have done before. Therefore, close collaboration and constructive feedback is essential to the quality and effectiveness of our stories.
For creators
We are currently working with child therapy and psychology experts to create guidelines on ways to incorporate therapeutic strategies into stories.
